14 Overhyped Holiday Destinations

Sharing is caring!

The holidays are often the perfect time to travel, and many of us dream of the ultimate Christmas or New Year’s getaway. Be it skiing in the Alps or marveling at dazzling light displays in a famous city, the idea of holiday travel feels magical until reality sets in. If you’ve ever fought through overcrowded streets or overpaid for a mediocre experience, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s something enchanting about the idea of these places. They’re iconic for a reason, but the hype doesn’t always live up to the reality. Sometimes, the best spots look better in Instagram photos than they feel in person, especially when you’re dealing with long lines, steep prices, and hordes of fellow tourists.

Let’s look at places that might not be worth the fuss before you pack your bags and buy into the hype of a holiday destination. Here are 14 overrated holiday destinations that might make you think twice about where to spend the season.

1. Times Square, New York City, USA

Sure, watching the ball drop in Times Square sounds iconic, but in reality, it’s a logistical nightmare. To get a decent spot, you’ll need to arrive hours, if not the entire day, early, often standing in freezing temperatures.

Add to that the tightly packed crowds and limited access to bathrooms, and the experience quickly loses its charm. Watching the festivities on TV might just be the better option.

2. The Eiffel Tower, Paris, France

Paris is the City of Light, but during Christmas, it’s more like the city of long lines. While the Eiffel Tower and Champs-Élysées are stunning with their festive decor, they’re also packed with tourists.

Restaurants and hotels hike their prices for the season, and the sheer number of visitors can overshadow Paris’s romantic charm. If you’re dreaming of a cozy holiday, Paris might not be your best bet.

3. Lapland, Finland

Lapland is often marketed as the ultimate winter wonderland, complete with reindeer sleigh rides and visits to Santa’s village. While it’s undeniably beautiful, the experience can feel manufactured and overpriced.

The remote location also means additional travel costs and limited dining and accommodation options. If you’re after authenticity, consider smaller, lesser-known winter destinations.

4. Disneyland, California, USA

Disneyland transforms into a magical holiday wonderland each December, but the crowds can make it a less-than-enjoyable experience. Lines for popular rides often exceed two hours, and even walking down Main Street can feel like a chore.

While the decorations are spectacular, the cost of admission and the stress of navigating the park during peak season might leave you wishing for a quieter holiday escape.

5. Venice, Italy

Venice is breathtaking any time of year, but visiting during the holidays might leave you disappointed. The narrow streets become even more congested than usual, and the damp winter weather can make exploring less enjoyable.

If you’re hoping for a quiet gondola ride or a romantic New Year’s Eve, Venice’s popularity might put a damper on your plans.

6. London, England

While London goes all out with holiday decorations, its popularity during Christmas can make it overwhelming. Covent Garden, Oxford Street, and Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park are beautiful but incredibly crowded.

Accommodations and dining are also significantly pricier during the holidays, and navigating the city’s transportation system during peak tourist season can be a headache.

7. Aspen, Colorado, USA

Aspen’s snowy slopes attract skiers and snowboarders from around the globe, but its exclusivity comes at a steep price. Accommodations, lift tickets, and dining in this luxury ski town are among the most expensive in the world.

For similar snow and fewer crowds, consider other U.S. ski destinations like Utah or Montana.

8. The Maldives

The Maldives are a dream destination for many, but visiting during the holidays often means inflated prices and fully booked resorts. Additionally, the weather can be unpredictable, with the potential for heavy rain dampening your tropical getaway.

If you’re set on a beach holiday, consider other islands that offer similar beauty without the holiday-season chaos.

9. Sydney, Australia

Sydney’s fireworks over the harbor are world-famous, but the experience isn’t as glamorous as it seems. Getting a good spot often requires hours of waiting, and the crowds are overwhelming.

The summer heat during Australia’s holiday season can also be a challenge, especially for those unaccustomed to celebrating New Year’s in sweltering temperatures.

10. Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo’s Christmas lights and seasonal markets are lovely, but Christmas isn’t a traditional holiday in Japan. Many of the celebrations feel commercialized, with less of the warmth and tradition found in other destinations.

The city’s popularity as a tourist destination means higher prices for accommodations and long lines at popular attractions during December.

11. Hawaii, USA

Hawaii offers a warm escape during the holiday season, but the demand for flights and accommodations makes it one of the priciest times to visit. Beaches and resorts can feel overcrowded, taking away from the island’s laid-back vibe.

If you’re hoping for serenity, visiting during the off-season might give you a more authentic Hawaiian experience.

12. The Swiss Alps, Switzerland

The Swiss Alps are a dream destination for winter sports enthusiasts, but the cost of a holiday here is exorbitant. Accommodations, lift tickets, and dining options come with sky-high price tags.

Crowds during the holiday season can also detract from the serenity of the mountains. For a similar experience, try exploring less-commercialized ski regions in Austria or Slovenia.

13. Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

Las Vegas may seem like the ultimate party destination for New Year’s Eve, but the city’s appeal can wear thin during the holidays. The Strip becomes a sea of people, making it difficult to enjoy the festivities.

Hotels and dining are also significantly more expensive, and the winter chill may catch first-time visitors off guard.

14. Dubai, UAE

Dubai pulls out all the stops for the holiday season with extravagant displays and events. However, the city’s luxury appeal often comes with eye-watering costs for flights, hotels, and dining.

The commercialized atmosphere can also feel overwhelming, lacking the cozy charm of more traditional holiday destinations.
