If there were to be a World War 3, I suspect it’d start on social media. These collaborative spaces that are supposed to unite people sometimes turn into battlefields of opinions and negativity. One minute, you’re watching cute puppy videos, and the next, you’re knee-deep in a comment section where people are insulting each other people’s grandmothers.

If you haven’t felt like giving someone a piece of your mind, count yourself lucky. Social media feels like one huge argument waiting to happen, and the more level-headed among us type paragraphs to vent but ultimately hit delete before clicking “post.”

It’s time to flip the script. The world needs kindness, even that anonymous troll hiding behind a profile picture of a flying cat. If you’d like to make social media a place for love, not hate, try these tips.

1. Pause Before You Post

Someone posts something infuriating, and your fingers fly to respond with all the sass and frustration you can muster. But before you hit send, take a moment and ask yourself, “Is this helping anyone?”
